Expeditionary Learning at Home

Keenan and Jonah made dumplings for lunch today using the recipe from the Joyous Chinese Cultural Center we went to on the Friday before break. It looks delicious to me. It also makes me so happy to the learning continue on at home. Thanks for sharing this picture with us!

Crew News December 16, 2011

Joyous Chinese Cultural School
Wow! What a day! We had a wonderful time at the Joyous Chinese Cultural Center. We did so many interesting activities. We made paper cut pandas, we learned to write/paint some Chinese characters, we learned how to make dumplings, we learned some Chinese dance moves. We also had a delicious lunch of noodles, dumplings and spring rolls. What a great finale to our We Are Family Expedition! I am sad that it is over but there is another exciting Expedition yet to come in second semester. Your child brought home a paper cut panda and some characters that they worked on today. Ask your child about the pictures in the slideshow below.

Winter Party
As if our experiences at the Joyous Chinese Cultural School weren't enough, we also had a winter party when we returned to school. We had hot cocoa, cookies and pretzels to eat and drink. We made a sleigh out of a Hershey bar and two candy canes. We read one winter book and we went to the holiday sing-a-long in the gym for a few songs. It was a full, fun and busy party. Thanks to Kerry for organizing it and to Aimee for the fun craft and to all of you who donated items and helped supervise the party.

No homework over the break. Head to the library and find some great books to read with your child. If you are stumped for titles, remember Gooney Bird Greene for reading aloud and Elephant and Piggie for independent reading. This will get you started and you can branch out from there.

Our IA after break will be Art.

Crew News December 15, 2011

Gift Idea
Since the crew has been so excited about all the things we have been learning about China, a pair of chopsticks might make a good holiday or birthday gift idea. My daughter had a set like those on the right. There are many kinds of fun "training" chopsticks. Not only are chopsticks fun, but they can help with manual dexterity and that will help improve handwriting. If you are looking for a gift idea or party favor, these might fill the bill.

Reading ~ Read a good book or two.
Math ~No homework today.
