Math Exchanges
Recently in math we have started something called Math Exchanges. The term math exchanges was coined by a math teacher named Kassia Omohundro Wedekind. During a math exchange, students work collaboratively on a math problem and exchange ideas and information about what might work to solve the problem. We meet with the students in groups of 4 and work together to solve problems like this:

Our crew parent is making muffins for our Halloween breakfast. She made 28 muffins. She decided to bring them to school in boxes. Each box will hold 10 muffins. How many boxes will our crew parent need?
Doing math exchanges has really brought some excitement to our math time. Students are either meeting with Ms. Dee or I in a group, working on math games on the computer, or playing math games with a partner or small group. Having taught grades 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 (including Algebra), I know that being able to solve this type of problem and think mathematically is so very important to the future math success of our crew. Thankfully, this is not their concern - they just think it is fun. Feel free to drop in on a Friday during our math exchange time from 12:45 - 2:00. You will be sure to be pulled right into the excitement.
