Elephant and Piggie Part 2

While watching these videos, I do notice that it can be hard to follow the Elephant and Piggie stories when you can't see the pictures. This only matters to you, our wonderful viewers. We pretty much know all of the story lines and think that they are very funny. That is what matters - the crew enjoying some great books. So I will think about how to do this differently in the future but for now, it is simply important that we all have a great time with these books.

Another note: I decided to use headbands to indicate which character was which because it goes along with a story line from a Roscoe Riley book that we read. In that book, Roscoe's first grade class was putting on a show about bees. They all had headbands with bobbles on top to look like antennae. In the story, the headbands were too big for the kids so Roscoe puts Super Mega Gonzo glue on all of them to make them on. Unfortunately, this causes a big problem when all the kids try to remove the headbands. Our crew loved this story line and I thought that they would enjoy having headbands of their own. We did, of course, talk about how our headbands would not need any glue.

First Grade Memories
Below is a Voice Thread of some photo memories of first grade - just a few snippets of our year. Enjoy! (If you get this post by email, you will need to go directly to the blog to view the slideshow. The right arrow button allows you to go through the photos at your own pace. This is a relatively short slideshow - for me.)

Books
Now is a great time to begin looking around your house and car for books that belong at school. Please help your child gather up any stray school books and return them to school. Your child won't need them in 2nd grade but the new crop of 1st graders definitely will. Also, if you are doing some spring cleaning and have books that your child no longer wants, please consider donating them to our crew library. Thanks.

Elephant and Piggie Reader's Theater

We have started performing our Elephant and Piggie books in reader's theater style. Here are the first 4 videos. More will be coming next week. I have to tell you that we talked about being very quiet during the filming so all of the giggling comes right after I turned off the camera - including Ms. Dee and I. Be sure to turn your sound up all the way - the volume is low on these. Each video is around 2 minutes long. (If you get this post by email, you will need to go directly to the blog to view the videos.)

Portfolios
Earlier in the week we worked on adding some of our work to our portfolios that will travel with us to second grade. It was fun to look back at our work from Kindergarten and see how much we have grown.

No homework for the long weekend. Enjoy some good books with your child.

Reader's Theater
We are such avid readers and we all love books by Mo Willems so much that I thought that a fun project for the end of our school year would be to use his books and have a reader's theater. Reader's Theater is when readers read the story with expression and bring it to life. We all chose a partner and a Mo Willems book to present to the rest of the crew next week. Below are some photos of our rehearsal time. Lots of fun!

Writer's Workshop
Our crew has really grown into amazing writers. Last Friday I was walking around and conferring with students and when I stood up I just happened to take a minute and notice how busy they all were with their writing. They were all completely absorbed. It was another one of those moments that teachers live for so I grabbed my iPad and took a very short video to share with you. This video is just to give you a peak at what it looks like in our room during Writer's Workshop these days. We have come so far since the beginning of the year. I get a little emotional (okay, very emotional) thinking that it will soon be time for them to move on but they are obviously ready. (If you get this post by email you will need to click through to the blog to see the video but it is totally worth it. They did not know I was filming them and you can see a couple of students figure it out - that is pretty cute, too.)

Studying the Soil
Last week we looked more carefully at the dirt samples that the crew brought in. One day we just looked at all the colors that dirt could be. Another day we dug in and touched the dirt to feel all of the different textures - sandy, fine, sticky (clay), dry, etc. We have been surprised at just how many different kinds of dirt there are. This week we are looking at how water drains out of each type of dirt and have more to learn later in the week. Dirt can be so fascinating.
