Fluency
For the next couple of weeks, we will be working on fluency in our Reader's Workshop. It is important to read fluently and with expression because this is tied directly to comprehension. When a child's reading is broken up or choppy, it is easy to lose the meaning of the story and this leads to confusion while reading. Our goal is to make our reading sound smooth and not like a robot. When reading is smooth and expressive, the reader can follow the plot of the story more easily. We reread (and reread) our books to practice our fluency. You can help by reading aloud to your child and by helping them reread to make their own reading more fluent. Show them how a character's voice might show various emotions. This is a fun strategy to practice so bring out your inner actor and enjoy some reading time with your child.
