Pajama Day
Pajama Day/Stuffed Animal Day was a big success. We began our day by introducing our animals to the crew and explaining how they should behave in 1st grade. Everyone, 1st graders and stuffed animals alike, have all behaved very well today as you can see in the photos below. Our animals were able to join us in all of our learning experiences today. They did take naps on our desks while we were at lunch, recess and PE. What a pleasant way to spend our last day before break.

Homework

iPad Apps
During our recent conferences, some parents have asked me for iPad app recommendations. I do have several apps on the iPads we use in our classroom but I haven't done an exhaustive search for apps at all. I much prefer apps that have kids creating something so my current favorite apps are Toontastic, ShowMe and ScreenChomp. (ShowMe has been having some "bug" issues recently so we are waiting for those to be fixed. They app creators are emailing me with ideas and suggestions. Another similar app that I just found is called Educreations. We may switch to that if I can't get the ShowMe issues figured out.) I also have links to our crew blog and to our Kidblogs so that students can blog on the iPads as well. I do have some apps that help our crew practice basic skills in math, phonics and spelling. Below are some photos of the apps that we have on our iPads if you are interested. If you have some great recommendations of some free apps for us, we would love to hear about them. (You can click on the picture to see a larger version of the photo.)

These are great words to point out to your child when they are reading or to have them practice spelling at home, too.

Organizing the Classroom Library
About twice a year, I have the crew clean, sort and reorganize the classroom library. This not only helps keep our library in order but it is also a sneaky way of getting the crew to find books that they might have been missing. They are always so excited when they find a book that is "new" to them. This helps us all find some great things to read during our center time in the classroom library. As you can see in the photos below, my secret plan worked. Look at them read!

Nonfiction Study
For the next few weeks in both reading and writing, we will be studying nonfiction texts. In Reader's Workshop, we will be learning about some of the text features of a nonfiction book like a table of contents, a glossary, an index, section headings and much more. In Writer's Workshop, we will begin writing an "All About" book about an animal of our choosing. We will learn how to take notes and then put those notes into books about our animals. We will try to add some of the nonfiction text features that we learn about during Reader's Workshop into the books we create during Writer's Workshop. We will not only find facts about our animals in books and magazines, we will also use some kid-friendly search engines and websites. You can see the sites we will be using on the Resources page of our crew blog under the Research heading.

Special Visit from Ms. Deborah
We frequently have nice visits from Ms. Deborah but today's visit was very special. Today she brought a box full of the books that we love. She had been in our classroom earlier and noticed what avid readers we have in our crew. She asked me for a list of titles so she could give us more books to read. We were very excited about all of the titles and couldn't wait to start reading. She also stayed for a little while and read us two of her favorite books. Ask your child about the stories she read to us. You can see how interesting the stories were in the photos below.

Great Series Books
We are continuing to look at great series books. Our crew spent the last couple of weeks reading books from the Cork and Fuzz series by Dori Chaconas and the Dragon series by Dav Pilkey. Ask your child what he or she thought of these series.

For the next couple of weeks, we will be reading books in the Andy Shane series by Jennifer Richard Jacobson and Abby Carter and the Young Cam Jansen series by David A. Adler and Susanna Natti. My goal is to expose the crew to many, many different types and series of books so that they will be able to find books that they enjoy when they visit the library.

More Voyage Photos
Ms. Heather sent in a couple of the photos she took on the Winter Voyage. I have added them to the end of our slideshow - right before the sleeping children. I am in these photos - proof that I was there. Thanks, Heather.
