Voyage
We had an amazing day! I personally had the best day on a Voyage that I have ever had (and I don't say that lightly). We hiked and we climbed and did a few other activities. The hands down favorite activity was climbing - real rock climbing. The kids were beside themselves with joy and pride! Just look at all the smiling faces in the Voice Thread below. There are many, many photos but they are worth the few minutes it will take to view them. What a fantastic experience for everyone!

Library Tomorrow
We have library tomorrow. We traded days with Ms. Mary Beth's crew because they will be on their Voyage tomorrow. Please help your child remember to return his or her library books.

Homework
Our Voyage is on Monday. Please help your child prepare his or her daypack.

Voyage Details
Your child will come to school and leave school at the regular times.

They will need:
a sack lunch
2 snacks
daypack
2 FULL water bottles
lip balm
sun glasses (if they wear them)
small bottle of sunscreen for reapplication if needed
hat
to wear closed toe shoes since we are climbing and hiking

Please send your child to school that day with their sunscreen already applied.

Also, check the weather that morning to determine if they will need a jacket or rain gear.

**It is really important that your child bring 2 full water bottles on this trip because this will be different from how things work at Camp Elim. At Camp Elim, they have large coolers set up for the kids to use to fill their water bottles. It is difficult to fit a water bottle under a bathroom faucet so it is important that your child bring 2 full water bottles so that they stay hydrated. There will be water available there but it might not be very easy to fill the bottles or to get very much water in a bottle.

Worms
Another exciting day! We looked at a worm up close on our document camera. We were able to really enlarge the worm to see lots of the details that we have been learning about. I don't want to steal your child's stories so I won't say much but I will say that our worm performed admirably and we were all extremely engaged.

Life is Art
The adult Life is Art event is this Friday. I am auctioning off a bedtime story along with a tuck into bed. I can't wait to find out who I will be tucking in.

Math Assessment
Yesterday's math assessment will be in today's homework folder. Overall, the crew did very well. I can see from the Open Response that we should continue to practice with fractions so the next Math Exchanges will focus on those.

Expedition
We learned a little bit about scientific notebooks. We have created an observation journal to keep track of what we notice about our worms. We are drawing sketches and writing notes about what we observe.

Service Learning
We ended up doing a little service learning project this morning. After our playground clean up yesterday, the crew wanted to figure out how to make sure that the playground stays clean. We generated lots of ideas. One big idea was to posts signs everywhere asking people to clean up their trash. We decided not to go with this idea because our signs might accidentally become litter on the playground. We decided to ask to visit classrooms and share our ideas with them about keeping our school clean. I emailed the other teachers and several of them invited us in today to speak to their crews. Every student in our crew who wanted to speak to another crew got the chance - some opted out of this experience. They all came back feeling very proud of themselves and hopeful that our school would stay clean and beautiful. Below is the list of names of which students spoke to which crews. Ask your child about his or her experience.

Mr. Neil - Joey and Keanan H.
Ms. Lisa - Nico and Tessa
Ms. Brittany - Will and Lulu
Ms. Mary -  Mark and Brandon
Ms. Lauren - Cole and Isadora
Ms. Hanni - Brek, Peyton and Kayden
Ms. Sarah - Sydney and Steyn
Mr. Josh - Lili and Dillen
Ms. Rebecca - Myles and Jonah
Ms. MarySue - Ava and Doran

Earth Day
We celebrated Earth Day today by cleaning up the trash on our playground - see the pictures below. We all wore a plastic glove and gathered up any trash that we found lying around. This was also a great launch for our Environmental Issues study in Writer's Workshop.

Library
We have library tomorrow. Please help your child remember to return their library books so that they can check out new ones.

Ms. Diana gave our crew a couple of compliments last week. She was so thankful that our crew does such a good job of returning our books each week. She was also impressed that the students in our crew went in to the library this week with specific books, series and authors that they wanted to check out. They are really turning into avid readers who know what they like to read.

Experts
We are working on becoming experts about worms. We have our worms in a worm farm now so that we can see how they create tunnels.

Today we read several articles about worms to learn and share new facts about worms with each other.

As we learn more about worms, we continue to think about the big ideas and guiding questions of this Expedition. There is so much to think about.

Water Bottles
We are getting to that time of year when having a water bottle at school becomes more and more important. Kids really need to have them so that they can get a drink at any time. It helps keep everyone hydrated and happy.

Basic Math Facts
We practice our basic addition and subtraction facts for a few minutes every day at the beginning of our math time by using our Fact Triangles. Your child should be working on memorizing these facts. (If they already have them memorized, they can work on improving their speed in calling out answers.) There are so may ways to practice these facts. They can play games on the computer (see the Resources page of this blog for some computer math games), they can use their fact triangles, they can play Addition Top-It (see the Math page on this blog for directions). Check the Resources page and the Math page of this blog for more ideas. Generally, on Wednesdays, the math homework is to practice basic facts. These ideas can be used then and at any time to brush up on the basic facts.

Welcome Back!
We are back and easing into our normal routine. We started off with lots of sharing this morning during morning meeting. Then we read Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes and sang the song to help us remember what we love about school. It was a great way to get back into the school routine. Here is the link to the 1 minute video we watched starring Pete the Cat:
