When I Grow Up
The VoiceThread below (with the voices of our crew this time) was created as part of our financial literacy study. We talked about the idea that people have choices in what jobs or careers they have. We also learned that people with different jobs can make different amounts of money. In the VoiceThread below you will see and hear the crew explain what career they would like to have when they grow up. (If you receive these posts by email you will need to go directly to the blog or click on the link below to view the VoiceThread.)

Crew News This Week
For the last two weeks, I have given updates about what we are learning in each content area. I thought that this week we would do something a bit different. This week we will have photos, VoiceThreads (slideshows with student voices) and maybe even a video or two of things that are happening each day in our room. These will just be random bits of our days. We will just have to see what turns up this week. Enjoy!

Crew News January 25, 2013

As I am sure that you read in the Family Letter that came home on Wednesday, we are really beginning to focus on learning basic addition and subtraction facts. Some of us are just beginning to memorize them while others of us are working to increase the speed with which we can say the answers. This is such an important skill to master at this age. Knowing the basic addition and subtraction facts quickly and accurately will make such a difference in your child's math career. I know I have mentioned this before but I have taught grades 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 (including Algebra). I can tell you that those students who had a solid foundation with their basic facts were so much more ready to tackle new math concepts and to use those basic facts to solve more complicated problems.  Now is the time to practice those facts with your child for a few minutes each day. Next week we will begin to create sets of Fact Triangles (flashcards) at school and at home that your child can use to help with practicing basic facts. There is an online fact practice game on the Resources page of our crew blog where students play against another player. You can ask your child to teach you how to play Beat the Calculator or you can quiz your child on facts as you are driving in the car. You can use whatever method you and your child enjoy. It's just important to work at it a little bit each day.

No homework for the weekend. Enjoy some good books with your child.

Our IA next week is PE. Remind your child to dress appropriately.

Writer's Workshop
During Writer's Workshop, we have begun a new study of realistic fiction. These are stories that could have happened but didn't. We talked about how writing this kind of story is a little bit like playing pretend. The writer (or pretender) gets to decide what happens and how the story will turn out. We are currently reading many realistic fiction books to notice how other authors write this type of story. This kind of story is fun to write because the author can be so creative and imaginative. They also help us think through some of our own problems as we read and write about the problems that the characters face.

Reader's Workshop
During our Reader's Workshop, we are working on the comprehension skills of asking questions and making inferences while we read. We have been talking about how important it is to think while we read so we began to notice what we were thinking about. We noticed that we were wondering about the stories we read or asking ourselves questions as we read. We know that asking questions helps us to stay focused on what we are reading because we then read to search for answers to our questions. Sometimes we find the answers and sometimes we don't but asking questions gives us so much to think about. All of this questioning will lead naturally into a discussion of making inferences. There will be times when we are reading that we won't find a direct answer to our questions but we will be able to figure out the answer to our questions by gathering clues as we read. This is called making an inference. We will begin to talk about making an inference next week.

Financial Literacy
I mentioned earlier when we began our study of patriotic symbols that there are some state standards that don't fit into our Expeditions. We began our unit on Financial Literacy today. This is another set of standards that doesn't fit into either of our Expeditions. In this unit, we will talk about jobs, income, saving money, spending money, wants/needs, good/services and setting a financial goal. I imagine that this unit will cause your child to ask you some financial questions. Be ready for how you are going to answer.
