Word Work

Our new sight words are: friend, when, because, talk, could

Previous words include: and, going, of, for, like, little, look, saw, she, said, the, thing, they, was, with, come, get, from, have, are, some, went, want, out, her, very, favorite, made, here, night

We are working on learning to spell these words correctly. We can read them, now we must learn to write them. These are great words to point out to your child when they are reading or to have them practice spelling at home, too.

Ask your child to explain how we practice these words at school using the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method.

ShowMe Showcase
For today's post, I thought I would share a few of the more recent ShowMes that some students have created. The ShowMes in this post will be all about books and reading. Students have been taking pictures of their favorite books or pages in their book and then recording their voice telling why they enjoyed this book. I love this type of ShowMe. I can see what books the crew is enjoying and I can listen to them talk about their favorite parts or summarize the story. I can learn so much about what a child knows about reading from watching these. I can also see that they have been watching the older crews very closely as they share "Good Reads" during our All School Meetings - our crew is using the same language that they use. These are also posted on each student's individual Kidblog if you would like to leave them a comment. Enjoy! (If you get this post by email, you will need to go directly to the blog to view the ShowMes.)

Reese shares her favorite book in the Magic Tree House series. Cutter also shares about a book from the Magic Tree House series. Jonathan shares his favorite part in an Elephant and Piggie book. Phoebe tells us a little about her favorite Henry and Mudge book. Matt tells us all about his favorite book in the Cork and Fuzz series. Sophia shares a book from the Boxcar Children series. Van also shares his favorite Henry and Mudge book. Homework

Scientific Observation Notebooks (Worm Journals)
Today we learned about how scientists keep track of their notes and observations. We learned that they must keep very careful, accurate notes when studying their topic. We began keeping notes about our observations about worms in a special worm journal. (Pictured below.)

Expert Group Presentations
We have begun researching worms. We started by reading some articles about worms. Today we shared with the crew what we learned from our particular article - or as we call them "expert texts". Each expert text group chose how to share their learning with the rest of the crew. Ask your child to tell you all about it. Below are some photos and videos of our presentations today. (If you get this post by email you will need to go directly to the blog to view the videos.)

Climbing
We will be climbing the week of March 11th. We will need lots of volunteers to help with the belaying.

There will be two belay training sessions - one on February 27th and one on March 6th. If you were trained in the fall you do not need to be retrained but you may come in for a refresher. If you are new to belaying you will need to take a training session. If you cannot make the training sessions but would still like to help out, contact Mr. Doug and he might be able to arrange another time for you.

Sign-ups for trainings and climbing are at  http://www.signupgenius.com/FindASignup
Search for the sign-up using Mr. Doug's email: doug.baker@dcsdk12.org

Our Newest Collection of Books to Explore
The photo below shows some of the books that we are exploring right now. I mentioned these books in an earlier post and called them my "secret weapon". These books appeal to everyone in the crew and help us avoid talking about the whole "chapter book" issue. Ask your child to tell you about them.

Reminders
  • Valentine's Day is tomorrow - send in those Valentine's Day cards. Your child will make a bag during the party to put their cards in.
  • No school this Friday (Teacher Work Day) and Monday (President's Day).
  • Be sure to check out the book orders and find some great books for your child. Kristen has sent you all the details in an email.

Expedition
As you know, we have started our second Expedition. It is called, Down to Earth, and has two main case studies. The first case study looks at the interconnectedness of living things and their habitats and the second case study takes a close look at one of the Earth's natural resources, soil.

The big ideas for this Expedition are:
  • Plants and animals depend on each other.
  • All living things depend on the resources of Earth.
  • Earth's resources are limited.
  • Scientists have a special way of doing things.
The guiding questions for the Expedition are:
  • How do plants and animals depend on each other?
  • Why is dirt important?
  • Who owns the Earth's resources?
  • How do we take care of the Earth's resources?
  • What do living things have or do that helps them survive?
  • How do scientists work?
We have already started to dig in and develop our thinking about these topics.

Last Thursday, after our interest was aroused by digging in a soil sample and finding worms, we created a chart of all of the things we wanted to learn about worms and how they live. We have so much that we want to learn.

Last Friday, we worked on charting our learning. We began with filling in the inner circle of a large concentric circle chart with what we already know about our first topic, worms. We will continue to add to our chart as we learn more throughout the study.

This week we have made predictions about how worms affect the soil and set up an experiment to test our ideas. We also began reading and researching about worms so we can find some of the answers to the questions on the chart above.

Life is Art
Last week I shared about how we worked on our crew Life is Art project. I also mentioned the service learning portion of this event. I had a few mistakes/misunderstandings in my post. The beautiful thumbprint tree will not be available at the auction. It will be on display in our school to remind everyone about our service learning project. For details about the project and to see the beautiful tree, please visit the Life is Art blog. (Click on the colored words to go directly to the Life is Art blog.)

Looking for Books
This weekend might be a good time to look around for any missing books. These might be library books, reading books or any other books from school. Have your child check his backpack, his room, under the couch and in the car for any books that have been misplaced and need to be returned to school. Some of the books we read are very small and easy to miss. Make a game of looking around to see if your child can find any missing books. Thanks.

Wow! What a Day!
We had a very busy day today. First we worked on our crew Life is Art project. We made a candle holder out of string. This will be beautiful. You will be able to see it and/or purchase it at the Life is Art event. We also added our fingerprints to a tree that will eventually have fingerprints from everyone in the school. This will also be available at Life is Art and the proceeds from this item will go to a special charity. This was the service learning part of the Life is Art experience. Ask your child about the sticker on his or her shirt today. It has a link where you will be able to find out more information.

Later in the morning we went to the library and got to watch a Reader's Theater performance put on by Ms. Diana and Ms. Kristen (yes, our crew parent). It was very funny and we all enjoyed it.

Finally, we launched our Science Expedition this afternoon. I'll let your child tell you all about it but you will get a good hint about what we are studying in the pictures below.
