Something to Look Forward to...

Spring Break is coming to an end. Students come back to school on Tuesday, April 7th. We have so many exciting things to look forward to in these last few weeks of the school year. Below are just a few things to share with your child as he or she prepares to come back to school.

We will be learning about adding and subtracting two digit numbers including adding and subtracting 10 mentally. We will continue to work on learning our basic facts by playing lots of games, too.

We will return to a regular Writer's Workshop format so we will be choosing what we want to write - stories about our lives, realistic fiction stories, fiction stories that include fantasy like talking animals or superheroes, nonfiction books or various other things. During this choice time, our lessons will be about writing great leads, writing with voice and choosing great words.

We will continue to learn more about our worms but we have a few new topics to add to our Down to Earth Expedition. Future topics will include bees, soil and the garden as a system. We will do lots of experiments with soil and we will plant the school garden.

Adventure Education
Part Two of our Winter Voyage (Spring Voyage) is coming up on Thursday, April 23rd. That is really quick - permission slips came home by email earlier this week. We will be going to Castlewood Canyon to climb the rocks in the canyon and go on a great hike. You will need a sack lunch on this day and clothing appropriate for climbing and hiking. Below is a picture from last year just to give you a sneak peek at what we will be doing.

In Reading, we will continue to talk about various comprehension strategies and topics. We are really becoming avid readers and we need to be able to share the ideas we read in our books with others. Below are a few pictures of books I have gathered from the public library to share with the crew. (Remember that you can click on the pictures to get a larger view.)

Wonder and Explore Station
We have been looking at our worm farm during our time at the Wonder and Explore Station but I after cleaning out some closets at my house, I found my daughter's old Snap Circuits, Jr. set - see the photos below. I will be bringing this in for us to explore. I certainly had fun playing around with it when I found it again. It would be great to have some donations of AA batteries for this station. For now, my daughter is letting me borrow her rechargeable AA batteries and her charger but she will need them back soon.

Build and Create Time
We always have our Build and Create Station in the rotation of stations but we change what we use to build and create with (Keva planks, blocks, gears, marble towers, soft blocks, etc.) and we will continue to do this. I was thinking that it might also be fun to have a whole crew Build and Create Time and get out all of our building sets at the same time to see what we can create. I think that we will try this idea at the end of April or the beginning of May when we need a change of pace. So the crew should be thinking about what they might want to do when we have those times.

As you can see, we have so much to look forward to as we come back from break. I know that I am very excited and can't wait to see the crew and hear all about their breaks. I also know that there will be many more exciting things to come. See you soon!
