Sorting Dominoes
Yesterday in math we sorted our dominoes by the sum of the dots on each domino. We all worked independently on this and we really liked doing it as you can see in the pictures below.

Independence
One of the things that will help your child most at school is a growing sense of independence. Being able to do things on their own gives children confidence to try other new things and to take risks. This is a good thing in many areas. If a child will take a risk, they will be more willing to try to figure out an unknown word or to try solve a more complicated math problem. They become what we call self-extenders which means that they begin to learn on their own and this makes them feel great. You can help your child with this by asking them to do things that they are capable of doing on their own. I know that it can take way more time and patience on your part (believe me, I know) but it really does pay off in the long run.  So ask your child to do those little things that they are capable of doing on their own. Some suggestions might be: learn to write their last name, learn their address and/or phone number, tie their own shoes, zip their coat, turn their coat right-side out, put on their own band-aids, etc. These little things will help them become more independent and feel more confident and this will carry over to their academic growth as well.

Bullying
Today Ms. Jennifer, our school psychologist, came to talk to our crew about bullying. She and Mr. Bill, our social worker, are going to all of the classrooms in our school to talk about this important topic. We all knew so many good strategies about how to deal with bullying and we learned a few new ones, too. Ask your child about the lesson with Ms. Jennifer today. (Pictures are below.)

Today we visited the Pacific Ocean Market and King's Land Restaurant in Denver. We saw so many new things. It was amazing. Below is a Voice Thread slideshow of some of the things we saw. We will try to record some voice comments next week. If you get this post by email you will need to go directly to the crew blog to view the slideshow. Ask your child to watch it with you to tell you about what is in each picture.

Letter Writing
Recently we have had a chance to write some letters to authentic audiences. Our Thanksgiving project last week was to write letters to servicemen and women expressing our appreciation for their work. We gave the letters to Tessa's grandparents who were mailing a box of items overseas. Earlier this week, we wrote letters to Tori wishing her the best on her new adventures in home schooling. We let her know that while we are very happy for her, we will miss seeing her everyday at school.
