- I believe that you learn something better when you teach it to others.
- I believe that kids learn things from each other because they see what other kids are doing and realize that they can do it, too.
- I believe that teaching the crew and standing up in front of them to teach something improves the confidence and speaking abilities of each crew member.

We Are All Experts!
One of my goals as a teacher is to
help each child find the things that they are passionate about and to
know their own strengths. To get us started thinking about this we
talked about the words “passionate” and “expert” during a recent
morning meeting. Then we created the charts shown
here. We will use these charts to help us remember that we are all good at
something. This helps on those days when something might seem
particularly challenging. We will also use them to get to know our crew
members better. We know who to ask if we need help or have a question
about something. We can also use the charts to help us recommend good
books that we find to others. They are also great conversation starters
and have led to some wonderful sharing. We are all really starting to
appreciate our differences and similarities and how these change over
time. It is so exciting to me to see the crew really show a deeper
understanding of each other and our strengths.

Books, Books, Books
I brought in some new collections of books from the Douglas County
Public Library for the kids to read and explore. These are books that
are just right for very beginning readers. These are extremely funny books that are just right or just a little bit challenging for
almost all of us to try to read and enjoy. (Even those students who
can read much more challenging books enjoy the humor in these books.) So if you
are needing suggestions for great books at your next library trip,
check out some of these books. These books will help you make reading
fun and enjoyable for your child. (While these books are mostly easy to
read, we will never say that - just like we don't want to label
children, we don't want to label books. We will just say that they are
fun to read or that they are great stories!)
Earlier in the year we read lots of books in the No, David! series by David Shannon and lots of books by Jan Thomas. These are also excellent books for very beginning readers.

Learning is Messy
Learning is messy! I don't necessarily mean a physical mess although it
can be that. I mean that everything your child learns is connected to
every other thing that he or she learns. Learning really can't be
completely compartmentalized into math, reading, writing, etc. It is
easy to see how reading and writing are related and how learning
something about writing can improve your reading and vice versa. Other
contents seem to separate more easily but are actually all connected,
too. That is one of the basic tenets of Expeditionary Learning - we
embrace the fact that learning is messy and all tangled up and not
neatly segmented into discrete areas. Below are a just a couple of
examples of messy learning in first grade.
We recently created graphs using name cards during a word work lesson. We created a graph by the number of letters in our names and then we created a graph based on the number of syllables in our name. How is this messy? Well, while we were thinking about letters within words and length of names, we were also learning to physically create a way to organize information to understand it better. When we created the graph of syllables in our names we began to think deeply about why this graph looked different from the previous graph. We thought a lot about how names might have lots of letters but not as many syllables. We wondered what a name with 10 syllables would sound like. We related this to our morning drum circles and thought about the beats in each name and how you would drum them. In first grade we casually introduce new learning mixed in with other/older learning and after a while we begin to notice that we know about a lot of things like: graphs, letters, words, syllables, music, naming conventions and more.
We are also slipping in more graph/chart making while practicing making tally marks. We have created two charts using tally marks - one about pets we own and one about our favorite season. While creating these charts, we are practicing making tally marks, counting by 5s, counting by 5s and switching to counting by 1s, organizing data in a way that makes it easier to understand, preparing to count the value of a collection of nickels and pennies and preparing to tell time on an analog (with hands) clock in 5 minute and 1 minute increments. What looks like a simple way to practice making and counting tally marks actually has many more purposes. Yes, learning is messy but learning this way of learning works so well.

Efficient Counting
We are learning to count efficiently. It is usually more efficient to
count large groups of items by 2s, 5s or 10s rather than one by one. In
order to do this we have to first learn to count by 2s, 5s and 10s. You
can help by counting with your child in the car to and from school.
Count forwards by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s and then count backwards (this will
help your child in the future with subtraction). Counting by 5s and 10s
comes in very handy when we begin to count the value of nickels and
dimes. Telling time on an analog clock (one with hands) depends on
knowing how to count by 5s, too. So these are important skills for your
child to have. We practice these skills at school by doing choral counts
as a group, by counting around the circle with each child saying the
next number in the series, by writing out the counts in our math notebooks, by counting large groups of items efficiently, by making tally
marks for numbers (this is basically counting by 5s), and by lining up
while counting by a certain number.
During a recent morning meeting, we had to line up in order. We each had a card with a number on it and we had to count by 5s to get in order. The tricky part was that we were not allowed to talk to each other while getting in order. We had to communicate in other ways in order to be successful. We were so proud when we did it as you can see in the photos below.

Family Pictures
The first activity of our "We Are Family" Expedition was to talk about how many people are in our family and to draw a picture of them and label each person in the photo. Be sure to check out our display in the hallway right outside our door.

Math Games and Activities
When we learn a new concept in math, we usually practice it by playing a game or doing an activity based on that concept. Below are a few older pictures of us doing just that.
These photos show us drawing numbers out of a pile and trying to estimate where they would go on our empty number line (piece of yarn). We kept drawing numbers and making adjustments to our number line until we had added all of our numbers.
In these photos we were practicing sorting and categorizing buttons and then trying to think of a way to show our thinking on paper using pictures, words or some combination of those things.
