Collaborative ShowMes
Today we worked on ShowMes about patriotic symbols with a partner. We had to collaborate on what facts were shared, what pictures were shared, who spoke which words, who drew any pictures and more. This is what it looked like in our room while we were doing this.

ShowMes
We will use technology in a variety of ways throughout the year. One way we are currently using it is with the ShowMe app on our iPads. This is a presentation app that allows students to record their voice while writing, drawing or sharing a picture. We use this to share our learning with each other. I also use it to assess what student know and can do. It is so valuable to me to be able to listen to a child explain his or her thinking while watching them write or draw. To help this process along, I give the students a Learning Target Checklist. As they create a ShowMe demonstrating that they know a topic, they can check off that target on their list. They can always go above and beyond and do ShowMes on topics that aren't on the list. Periodically throughout the year, I give them new checklists to use as we learn new things. Here are some of the things on our current checklist:

Creating ShowMes to Share Our Learning
On Friday afternoon, we had a ShowMe creation time where we all worked on ShowMes at the same time. We spread ourselves out around the room and spoke very quietly into our ipads so that we could all record at the same time.
Mr. Doug had given us some of the crew's P.E. assessments that he wanted to go into the student's portfolios. Since we are using our blogs as our portfolios, we created some ShowMes to tell about our P.E. assessments. We also used that time to catch up on other ShowMes that we needed to have in our portfolios as well. The videos below will give you a peek at what it looked and sounded like while we were creating our ShowMes. After a small group of students finished, they came and sat on the floor with me and we read a book about Mercy Watson while others finished their ShowMes. We still needed to be quiet so we squeezed together in the corner so that we could all hear and see the book.

ShowMe Showcase
As I mentioned in the earlier post today, we worked collaboratively with a partner to create a ShowMe to share what we have learned so far about the symbols of the United States. I wanted to share one of those ShowMes with you and point you to our Kidblog page to view more. (There were a few inaccurate details in a couple of them. I have made a note of these and we will clear up a few points next week. They are all pretty cute, though.) Enjoy. The 4Cs: Communication, Creativity, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking
As you are aware, we work really hard to use the 4Cs all day, every day. They are embedded in everything we do. Sometimes, however, we want to talk a bit more about one of the Cs so we do an activity that helps us think more about that particular C.
One activity that we do is having a Maker Station as one of the rotations of our Build and Create Station. At this station the students must think creatively to use recycled objects and turn them into something else. They must also think critically as they try to actually build their idea and think about things like building strength and balance so that their creation can stand up if necessary. They also collaborate and communicate by sharing ideas with their station partner. Together they can come up with ideas to overcome a tower that just won't stay standing or what to do when the glue isn't strong enough to hold their creation.
Another activity we do is a morning meeting game called, "What could it be?" For this game, I grab an item from our pile of recyclables and we pass it around the circle answering the question about what it could be. The first time we played this game the crew was worried that they wouldn't be able to think of any ideas. Now they know that not only will they have an idea but that they will have many ideas and will want to build their idea during their next visit to the Maker Station.
Sometimes we adjust an "old" activity to make it more collaborative. For example, we normally create our ShowMes on our own during our station work time. Today we tried to create a ShowMe with a partner about something we have learned about a patriotic symbol or holiday or famous American. We had to work together to decide what content we wanted to include, how we wanted to present it and what parts each partner would do.
We will continue to work on learning these skills and to begin to use these words in our daily discussions.

Crew News May 7, 2013
A Lesson by Reese
Last week, Reese figured out how to make multiple page ShowMes. The crew was very excited to learn how she did this. So on Friday, Reese taught the crew how she figured it out. We decided to video tape it for future reference. Trey was our camera person since he had the best angle to see Reese and the screen from his desk. Below are the videos (there are two short videos that are less than one minute each - we had a bit of a technical issue with plugs and cords and had to stop and start again) and the ShowMe that Reese created that inspired all of this learning. Her voice is very soft so turn up the sound on your computer. If you get this post by email, you will need to go directly to the blog to view the videos. Enjoy!
We are also very excited about this new learning because now we can "publish" the books we write to our blogs and read them aloud to our audience. Sophia was the first to try (others are now getting theirs up, too, but it will take a while to get all of them up). Below is Sophia's All About book. Crew News February 25, 2013
ShowMe Showcase
For today's post, I thought I would share a few of the more recent ShowMes that some students have created. The ShowMes in this post will be all about books and reading. Students have been taking pictures of their favorite books or pages in their book and then recording their voice telling why they enjoyed this book. I love this type of ShowMe. I can see what books the crew is enjoying and I can listen to them talk about their favorite parts or summarize the story. I can learn so much about what a child knows about reading from watching these. I can also see that they have been watching the older crews very closely as they share "Good Reads" during our All School Meetings - our crew is using the same language that they use. We have had a chance to begin to create some ShowMe's. We are using the ShowMe app on our iPads to teach others about things we are learning. We have several new ShowMe's and most of them have been on math topics. I have posted a few examples below for you to check out. I have also added these to each student's individual blog so be sure to check out our Kidblog page and give these students a comment or two. They would love to hear from you - you may comment on any child's blog. ShowMe's are also a great way for me to be able to see exactly what a child understands about a concept and any misunderstandings that they may have. Boot Camp is this Friday. Our crew will be at Boot Camp from 9:15 am to 11:15 am. All students will need to bring a lunch from home on Friday. There will be no school lunches that day. Your child can continue to bring in non-perishable food items and collect pledges all week.
No school on October 22nd. This will be a teacher work day.

ShowMe App
We have been experimenting with a new app on our classroom iPads. It is called ShowMe. At first, I did not give the crew any directions for this app. I just let them play around with it to learn what it could do. I believe that this is the way that most of us learn how to use new apps and programs most successfully, too. Now that they have had some time to experiment. I have asked them to use the app to teach others a math concept or to explain how they solved a problem in math. I will post any new math ShowMe's to the students' blogs. So be sure to check in often. Below is a sample ShowMe from our experimentation period. It was created by Will. PS I am posting this sample today so that I can experiment with how to embed a ShowMe onto a blog.
