We also learned that people with different jobs can make different amounts of money. Boot Camp is tomorrow. Our crew will be at Boot Camp from 9:15 am to 11:15 am. All students will need to bring a lunch from home tomorrow. There will be no school lunches tomorrow. Your child can continue to bring in non-perishable food items and collect pledges all week.
Be sure to dress warmly and have rain gear!
No school on October 22nd. This will be a teacher work day.

Our Hopes and Dreams for First Grade
On the first day of school we thought about our hopes and dreams for first grade. Below is a Voice Thread (slide show) of our pictures and thoughts about what we hope will happen this year. They are very cute. I am so happy that I will be able to make many of these hopes and dreams come true. Voice Thread is an application that we will be using often this year. Click on the arrow to start the slide show. You can then just watch as the pictures go by or you can move forwards and backwards using the large arrows at the bottom of the Voice Thread. Later in the year we will begin to add our voices to each picture to describe it but for the beginning of the year we are just using pictures. First Grade Memories

Now is a great time to begin looking around your house and car for books that belong at school. Please help your child gather up any stray school books and return them to school. Your child won't need them in 2nd grade but the new crop of 1st graders definitely will. Also, if you are doing some spring cleaning and have books that your child no longer wants, please consider donating them to our crew library. Thanks.

Poetry Tag
We are playing Poetry Tag with some classes from around the country. Mrs. Frazier's class from Ohio started the game. This is the class that we Skyped earlier in the year. They chose a poem and put it in a Voice Thread and invited others to comment. They then "tagged" the next class and they added a poem. Today was our turn to add a poem. Feedback for Me
Thanks so much for all of the responses to my survey asking for feedback for me. It truly helps me to know what it is that you value and what you think has been valuable for your child. I will use this feedback as I plan the rest of this year and begin to plan for next year. I will leave the survey open so if you still would like to add your input or if you think of something else to add you can do that. Thanks again.

Constructing Polygons

Winter Voyage
We all had a great time hiking, sledding and doing lots of team building activities on our Winter Voyage. Thanks so much to all of the chaperones who helped out today. Schedule Changes
Due to the TCAP (formerly CSAP) testing in the upper grades, we will have a different schedule this week. We will go to our IA class immediately after our morning meeting. If you volunteer in our classroom during centers, that time is different this week and might not fit your schedule. We will start centers around 10:15 each day. Our afternoon schedule is very close to the same times so if you help out in math our writing, those times will remain the same. Thanks.

Crew News February 24, 2012
Skype Session
Today we had a Skype session with Mrs. Frazier's class in Columbus, Ohio. This was our first time to Skype with them so we just spent the time getting to know each other. We asked them some questions about their school and Ohio and they asked us about our school and Colorado. Next time we Skype with them we will share books that we like or do some math together. It was so nice to meet them today. We are looking forward to talking to them again soon. (Pictures are below.)

Mrs. Frazier's crew made a Voice Thread about one of our favorite books and shared it with us. We viewed it today and some of us were able to make comments on it during center time. You have all seen the Voice Thread that we created with pictures from our recent climbing experience. We have been adding comments to the pictures during our time on the the computer. Each child has an "identity" in our Voice Thread account and can make comments on any picture in the thread. They love to do this. At this point they can't access their "identity" from home. You can, however, create a free Voice Thread account (at www.voicethread.com) for your family and have different identities there. Then all of you could add a voice comment to any of our voice threads. But this is only if you are all interested in doing this. Great Discussion This Week
We had several great discussions this week. I will share two of them with you here. One was in math. We were sorting dominoes into piles by the numbers of dots on them. The piles we were creating were both numbers even, both numbers odd and one odd and one even number. Some of the dominoes were blank or had zero dots. This led to a great discussion about whether zero was even or odd. We used patterns on our number grid to decide that zero in even. (In later years they will learn about even numbers being divisible by 2.)
Another great discussion was during Expedition. We were finding China on a map and I mentioned that when it was daytime here that it was nighttime in China. This led to a long discussion of day and night, the Earth's rotation around the sun and how the Earth rotates on it's axis. We acted out what happens with Morgan playing the sun while I spun and rotated our globe around her. We also ended up talking about continents and the equator. They were fascinated and really enjoyed the discussion. I love when things just develop like this out of pure interest.
