Fall Break is Almost Over
Fall Break is almost over and we will be getting back into the school routine on Tuesday. If your child needs a little something to look forward to please show the picture below to them. We have some new additions to our crew and they brought a new book to share. The crew will be very excited to see this. See you soon!

Summer Reading
At our Closing Circle on Thursday I mentioned that I would post pictures of myself reading on the blog and that I would love to get some pictures of the crew reading this summer that I could also post on the blog. I already got the first picture!
So what am I reading? Over Memorial Day weekend, I participated in a "chat" on Twitter called #titletalk. This chat involved teachers and librarians who get together once a month on Twitter to talk about books and how to use them in your classroom. Last weekend the topic was Graphic Novels.
I was really interested in this topic because our crew loves Elephant and Piggie books so much that I wanted to find that "next, great series" for them to love. I learned about many series during the chat so I put them on hold at the library and they came in yesterday. I spent this morning reading and reading and found some great new series that I know many in our crew would love. I just wish I had a couple more weeks with the crew. Anyway, I created a new Pinterest page of these books that I wanted to share with you as you are looking for great books to read this summer. Elephant and Piggie Part 2
While watching these videos, I do notice that it can be hard to follow the Elephant and Piggie stories when you can't see the pictures. This only matters to you, our wonderful viewers. We pretty much know all of the story lines and think that they are very funny. That is what matters - the crew enjoying some great books. So I will think about how to do this differently in the future but for now, it is simply important that we all have a great time with these books.
Another note: I decided to use headbands to indicate which character was which because it goes along with a story line from a Roscoe Riley book that we read. In that book, Roscoe's first grade class was putting on a show about bees. They all had headbands with bobbles on top to look like antennae. In the story, the headbands were too big for the kids so Roscoe puts Super Mega Gonzo glue on all of them to make them on. Unfortunately, this causes a big problem when all the kids try to remove the headbands. Our crew loved this story line and I thought that they would enjoy having headbands of their own. We did, of course, talk about how our headbands would not need any glue.

Crew News February 6, 2012
Great Series Books
I mentioned last week that we are reading aloud some great chapter books. We are also exploring various series of books that are "just right" for first graders to read to themselves. We looked at books in the following series: Elephant and Piggie, Pigeon, Fly Guy, Little Critter, Pete the Cat, Henry and Mudge, and Annie and Snowball. This week we will be looking at the Mr. Putter and Tabby series. This series is also by Cynthia Rylant, one of our favorite authors and author of the Henry and Mudge series and Annie and Snowball series. We have a big bin of these books (checked out from the public library) and we will read some aloud together and they will be available for students to read at many times of the day. My hope in doing this is that students will find series and authors that they love. Then they will be able to find books that are "just right" for them when they visit the school or public library. If you haven't checked out some of these series, please do. You will like them, too. I'll keep you posted as we add more series and authors to our growing list of favorites.

Elephant and Piggie Came to School Today
Elephant and Piggie from the Mo Willems series of books came to school today. We got to see them in the library. We were so excited because we love them! They put on a play of one of their books. Ask you child to tell you all about the pictures below.

Crew News October 28, 2011
Gifts from Ms. Deborah
Ms. Deborah has been visiting our crew and she noticed how much we all love Elephant and Piggie books and Pete the Cat books. So she surprised us with new books for our classroom. She gave us copies of Pete the Cat I Love My White Shoes, Pete the Cat Rocking in my School Shoes and the newest Elephant and Piggie book called Happy Pig Day. We love these books and could read them over and over again. Many of us are also writing books about these characters during Writer's Workshop. Thank you, Ms. Deborah!
Homework
No homework for the weekend. Enjoy a few good books with your child.

Books by Mo Willems
As a crew, we have found a new favorite author. We love Mo Willems. He is the author of the Elephant and Piggie series, the Pigeon series and the Knuffle Bunny series, among others. We all especially love the Elephant and Piggie series because the books are so funny and we can all read almost all of them on our own. The humor in this series really appeals to first graders. People are saying that Mo Willems will be the Dr. Seuss of this generation. We have 25 of these books checked out of the public library and enjoy reading them any chance we get. If you are looking for a good book on your next trip to the public library, check out an Elephant and Piggie book.
