Phonics/Word Work Workshop

In first grade, we also have a phonics lesson each day. I call this a Word Work Workshop with the crew because that name seems to make more sense to them. We started our first unit during the first week of school and are now about a third of the way through it. We are taking some time to review some letter and word skills that we learned in Kindergarten. This unit includes reviewing short vowel sounds, digraphs (ch, th, sh), a few blends (br, gr, etc) and snap words (another name for sight words or high-frequency words).

In Kindergarten the phonics mascot was Mabel the elephant and in first grade our mascot is Rasheed the lion. The crew does love having a mascot. He appears in stories and in various other places like on our alphabet chart.
