Writing Workshop

We also started our first writing unit of study during the first week of school and we are now about a third of the way through it. We are learning to write personal narratives with focus, detail and dialogue. We have been learning that our lives are full of small moment stories to tell, that writers plan before they begin writing, that writers stretch out works to spell them, and much more.

We have completed our first writing pre-assessment so that Ms. Cate and I could see what each writer could already do and what their next steps as a writer would be. Ms. Cate took over the teaching of writing this week. She is working on her teaching degree and functions as a student teacher or co-teacher in our classroom.

Our writing workshop consists of a writing mini-lesson followed by a time for independent writing. During independent writing Ms. Cate and I move around the classroom and confer with writers one on one to work on specific skills that they might need. Students also have a writing station during Explorations Stations where they can choose to write about anything and right now many of them are choosing to write comic books.

Below are some photos of our crew during various writing activities.
