Over 300 Books
We have read over 300 books together as a crew. There have been so many great ones. Click here or one the picture below to see some of titles we have read. Once you are on our Shelfari site, click on the blue "next" button to see more pages of shelves.
We keep track of the books we read aloud on our Shelfari bookshelf. Students in the crew take turns adding books to our shelf.
Non-Fiction Titles
The email I sent you last night had lots and lots of fiction titles that might be good for your child to read over Spring Break and Summer Break. Below are some photos of some great non-fiction series that your children love. There are so many titles in each series that there is something for all tastes. The crew is loving all of the non-fiction reading we are doing. We just can't stop sharing all of the cool facts we are learning. Ask your child what books he or she has enjoyed and what they have learned.

The National Geographic Kids series has books in a variety of levels. You can see a number indicating the level of challenge of the book in the upper right hand corner of each book.

The See More series of books by Seymour Simon has more fascinating topics and wonderful photos.

The Weird But True series by National Geographic has loads of odd but interesting facts. The crew loves these books. There are easier books (pictured on the left)  and more challenging books (pictured on the right) in this series.

Non-Fiction Writing
This week we also started a new genre study on "All About" books in writing. We will be learning about how to write a non-fiction book that is "all about" an animal of our choosing. We have all chosen an animal and have started the first stages of doing research about our animals. Ask your child what animal he or she has chosen.

We will have library this week after all. The make-up tests for TCAP are all done. So, please help your child remember to return any books that they might still have out so that they can check out some good books to have over Spring Break.

Reading ~ Read a good book or two.
Math ~ Practice basic addition and subtraction facts or practice counting small groups of coins.

Reading Non-Fiction Books
Last week we started a reading unit of study on non-fiction books. We are learning the similarities and differences between fiction and non-fiction along with many of the text features (see the photo below) of non-fiction. We have learned that non-fiction does not always have to be read from beginning to end but that we can pick and choose the sections to read or to read first. A side benefit of all of this is that we are also learning some cool facts about some great non-fiction topics like the Titanic, Race Car driving, Ponies, Dinosaurs, Rocks and Minerals, Lizards and many other animals and lots more. We are finding that non-fiction is fun to read, too.
Our non-fiction text features chart. We will continue to add to it all week.

Ms. Pam would like everyone to know that the rest of the clay self-portraits that are on display at school are ready to go home. You may come in at any time to pick up your child's self-portrait if you would like - just please be sure that your child knows you have it. Otherwise, they will be sent home with your child on Friday at the end of the day.

Reading ~ Read a good book or two.

Buzzing with Excitement!
We started the next part of this first case study on the interdependence between plants and animals for our Down to Earth Expedition. Today we took a close look at bees. We each got a dried bee and glued it to a stick for easier handling.

The first part of this case study was about the interdependence of worms and soil. This part will be about the interdependence of bees and flowers. We are buzzing with excitement!

Reading ~ Read a good book or two.
Math ~ Home Link 7.7 Symmetry in Nature - for this assignment, your child may draw the pictures or print them from the internet if you don't have any magazines that they can use.

Sharing our Writing with an Audience
We invited Ms. Hanni's 2nd grade crew to come in today during writing. We shared our realistic fiction books. It was so nice to have a new audience for our writing. We were very excited.

No homework for the weekend. Read some good books with your child.

Our IA next week is Art.

Lost and Found
Is your child missing a coat? Please be sure to check the Lost and Found - it is overflowing with items. All items will be donated over Spring Break so gather any missing items before they are gone.

Word Work

Our new sight words are: new, nice, kick, rain, house
Previous words include: and, going, of, for, like, little, look, saw, she, said, the, thing, they, was, with, come, get, from, have, are, some, went, want, out, her, very, favorite, made, here, night, friend, when, because, talk, could

We are working on learning to spell these words correctly. We can read them, now we must learn to write them. These are great words to point out to your child when they are reading or to have them practice spelling at home, too.

Ask your child to explain how we practice these words at school using the Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check method.

World Read Aloud Day
Today is World Read Aloud Day. Be sure to read aloud to your child, have them read aloud to you or even better - do both. We read aloud at school today. You can always check the bookshelf on the side bar of this blog to see what new books we have read aloud each day. You probably won't be surprised to learn that there are many worm books on our shelf. (If you get this post by email, you will need to go directly to our blog to view our book shelf.)

Ms. Noreene read a book called "!" by Amy Krause Rosenthal.
I read aloud everyday. Our current read aloud is Marty Maguire Digs Worms.
Ms. Wendy reads Mr. Putter and Tabby Catch the Cold.

Thank You!
Over the weekend, I finally spent the Amazon gift card that so many of you contributed to as a gift for me. I had so much fun buying books. I bought books for our crew. I bought more Elephant and Piggie books, Fly Guy books, Ricky Ricotta books, Pete the Cat books, Dragon Tales books and Bink and Gollie books. I also pre-ordered some not yet published books in our favorite series. I love picking out books for our crew. I know that there will be so much excitement in the air when I bring them in. Many of the books are due to arrive today which means that I will have to wait until after our Voyage to share them with the crew.  That will be so hard! So thank you so much for the gift card. It will make many people very happy.

I also used our "bonus points" in our recent book order to get some other titles for the crew. Titles like Mal and Chad, Penny and her Song, Baby Mouse, Secret Agent Splat, The Day the Dinosaurs Died, Binky the Space Cat, Joe and Sparky and a pack of Toon Book Readers. These will also make the crew very happy. Thanks to those of your who ordered and earned those bonus points for us. We love getting new books.

As your child out grows books that they are currently reading, please consider donating them to our classroom library. We love donated books, too.

Reading ~ Read a good book or two.
Math ~ Practice your basic addition and subtraction facts.

Gather your gear for our Winter Voyage tomorrow.

The Language of Math
We are starting a Geometry unit in math. We will be doing many activities with 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes. Last week, we learned a new shape game. Two people play the game. Both players choose the same 6 shapes from a pile of shapes. Then they put up a file folder "wall" between them. One player creates a design using those 6 shapes and gives directions to the other player to build the same design. The listener may ask questions at any time. The catch is that they can't see what the other is building. It turns out that it is rather challenging to use accurate and descriptive math language in order to get your partner to recreate your design. Below are some photos of us playing this game.
