Solo Math

Much of the time in math we play games, do activities with a partner and have whole group and small groups discussions. Last Friday we tried something a little different. We combined solo time with math time and had solo math. We were working on composing the numbers 6, 7, 8 and 9 using dot cards with 2, 3, 4 and 5 dots on them. We tried to think of all the ways that we could make each number using our dot cards. If we thought we found all of the ways, then we challenged ourselves to find all of the ways to make a larger number of our choice. The room was silent just like during a solo time and you could see the wheels turning in everyone's minds. Because Math is usually a more talkative time, Ms. Wendy was shocked when she came in after her recess duty. She took the photos and video below so you could see how solo math looked and sounded. (Yes, there is sound on the video - it is just that quiet in the room!)

Our volunteer today is Ms. Karen. Ms. Karen comes in on Fridays during Exploration Stations. She is very good at helping students with any issues that they might have. In the pictures below she is helping Kaisa decide on a topic for her next ShowMe. Thanks, Ms. Karen!
